How to Transition Your Cat to New Food

February 1, 2026Ellbow Team

Why Gradual Transition Matters

Cats have sensitive digestive systems. A sudden change in diet can cause stomach upset, vomiting, or diarrhea. A gradual transition over 7-10 days is recommended.

The 7-Day Plan

**Days 1-2:** 75% old food, 25% new food

**Days 3-4:** 50% old food, 50% new food

**Days 5-6:** 25% old food, 75% new food

**Day 7+:** 100% new food

Tips for Picky Eaters

  • Warm the new food slightly to enhance aroma
  • Add a small amount of bone broth for flavor
  • Try mixing in a familiar treat
  • Be patient — some cats need extra time

  • When to Contact Your Vet

If your cat refuses to eat for more than 24 hours or shows signs of distress, consult your veterinarian.
